Black Vulture - Coragyps atratus
Sightings:
Tarcoles River, Costa Rica, 29.1.2014, 2 birds. Seen elsewhere in Costa Rica also.
Seen between Santiago and Vina del Mar, Chile, December 2016.
Notes:
The bird above had landed on tidal mud in the Tarcoles River bed and was finding it difficult to maintain its balance. Distinguished in flight from underneath by only having white primaries. Perched, it's head is black not the reddish colour of a Turkey Vulture.
One of the birds in Chile was struggling with a fish skeleton.
