Grey (Black-bellied) Plover - Pluvialis squatarola
Sightings:
Ballona Wetlands, Los Angeles, U.S.A.: 2015: September.
Notes:
Known as the Grey Plover (compared to Golden Plovers) from its winter plumage in much of the world, but the Black-bellied Plover in the Americas from its summer plumage. The two birds above show how different the two plumages are. In non-breeding plumage, it has black axillas still, making it easy to identify if it raises its wings! It breeds in the northern hemisphere, and winters mostly in the southern.
